taking care of a senior dog is one of the hardest things i have done. not only is it frustrating to clean up pee because my dog is so senile he THINKS he is outside. not only is it trying to have to think, before i plan any outing, about what how he will fair with my absence, not only is it sad to see him deteriorate before my eyes...it can also be dangerous!
my family and i were watching a tv show the other night in our entertainment room, which happens to be the basement. we usually carry jonah down the stairs and then back up when we are through.
we were watching LOST the other night and avery states, "jonah just peed." i got up out of the chair and picked him up to take him outside. clearly, he had slipped and fallen into the pee puddle and so the underneath side of him was soaked. i started up the stairs with him, headed for the tub, when he got all squirmy and tripped me. i could not catch myself with my hands because i had such a fragile bundle of dog in my arms. i caught myself with my face on the concrete wall. OUCH!...i think i yelled, but went on with my business and deposited him in the tub. as i was quickly rinsing him i noticed big drops of blood landing in the water and reached up and touched my sore face...my hand came back covered in blood.
i got him out, dried him off, and put a wash cloth on my eyebrow and settled onto the bed.
tobin called out for me from the basement, wondering if i was coming back down..."NO!" i replied. he came up to see what was up and upon looking at my face stated we were going to the emergency room. i felt like this was a bit over doing it, but went along with his decision.
so, 3 hours and 6 stitches later we made it back home. i have quite a shiner and a bit of "face"ache, but the senior dog is safe and sound!
