ode to butler

butler, my parents dog, died today.  he was 14 and such a cool dog.  i first saw him as a puppy outside my apt. window here in norman when i was 19.  he was a tiny thing, being walked by a neighbor girl.  i talked to her one day while walking jonah and she was actively looking for a home for him.  her boyfriend found him on his front porch and they couldn't keep him.  it was june and i thought, "what a GREAT father's day present!".  i took him to my parents' house early on father's day and plopped him on their bed just as they were waking up and they thought i was crazy, which i probably was!
i will never forget the look on their faces...but they welcomed the little pup into their lives.
he turned out to be one of the best dogs i have ever known.
when avery was born and began to toddle around, butler never left his side.  we would go on walks and he would be right there by him, stopping when he stopped, running when he ran.  he would sleep with avery every night when we visited them and would not get up until avery did.
we will miss him so much and are very thankful to have had him brighten our lives.
